Whether you are photographing your own baby at home or you’re a newborn photographer looking to get better photos, I have a simple tip that will help!
You’ve made the decision you want to document your pregnancy! The next step is to find a good maternity photographer. There’s a few tips that will help in making this task as easy as possible!
Celebrate Valentine’s with a mini-session for your kids or the whole family! You can use my valentine’s day themed (simple) props or just use the scenery and take photos you’ll love forever.

After they finished their home, this sweet family asked me to photograph them with their twin boys. The home has so much natural light. The color palette is mainly soft neutral colors, which is perfect for this type of session.
We moved from room to room and let the boys play. It was exactly what you think of when you hear lifestyle photography. They did what they always do with the boys, right down to the bath!
White balance is the color temperature of your photo. You can either shoot in auto white balance or adjust the kelvin setting.
HSL sliders in Lightroom allow you to change the Hue, Saturation, and Luminance of the photo.
The sliders are divided into each color group: red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, purple, magenta. Each color then has a slider for hue, saturation and luminance (HSL).
When I go out to eat, I don’t mess around. If it’s a place I haven’t been before, I’m asking friends, checking the website and reading all the Yelp reviews. Life it too short to pay for a bad meal!
And I would recommend treating photography the same way. Do your research before you commit to a photographer. Who wants to spend hundreds of dollars on an experience you hate or photos you don’t love!?
The key to getting a good amount of variety in a newborn session is all in the flow! And the flow is important to get the clients in and out in under 90 minutes (or 45 minutes if it’s just the baby). There are times I need a little bit more time (if the baby is very fussy) but most clients don’t want to be in a session for hours.
First birthdays usually involve cake and many times, it’s their first taste of sugar! One year olds tend to fall into the category of no interest or going ham.
One of my previous newborn clients asked me if I knew anyone that did milk baths. Instead of referring it out, I decided to learn how to create the most beautiful milk bath for a maternity photography session.
The first thing we talked about was location. Most photography studios don’t have a stand alone bath tub, so options typically include the client’s home or a hotel room. I’m lucky enough to have a spacious bathroom with a stand alone tub and very neutral decor, so we decided to do the session in my bathroom.
