As an Orange County newborn photographer, one of the questions I’m asked most often is: “What is the best age for a newborn photoshoot?” Capturing those early days of your baby’s life is incredibly special, and timing plays a huge role in achieving those soft, curled-up poses and peaceful sleepy images that define classic newborn photography.

What Is the Best Age for a Newborn Photoshoot?

The Ideal Age: 7–14 Days Old

The sweet spot for a newborn photoshoot is typically between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are still very sleepy, flexible, and comfortable being gently posed. Their feeding and sleeping patterns are still predictable enough that sessions tend to flow smoothly, allowing us to capture serene, timeless images.

Why This Age Window Works Best

Here are the main reasons the 7–14-day window is ideal:

  • Sleepiness: Newborns spend long stretches asleep, which helps us achieve those dreamy, peaceful portraits.

  • Natural Curl: Babies naturally curl into the womb-like positions that create those classic, heart-melting poses.

  • Minimal Colic & Baby Acne: Many babies begin developing acne, gas, or colic closer to 3–4 weeks, making the earlier days more reliable for smooth sessions.

Can You Still Do a Newborn Photoshoot After Two Weeks?

Absolutely! While the classic posed newborn session is easiest under two weeks, I photograph beautiful newborns all the way up to 6–8 weeks old. Beyond the 14-day mark, babies are more alert and often prefer to stretch out, which leads to:

  • More expressive, awake photos

  • Sweet eye contact

  • Lifestyle-focused posing instead of curled poses

These sessions are just as meaningful—just different in style.

Preparing for Your Newborn Session

To make sure your session goes smoothly, I always recommend:

  • Booking during pregnancy (if possible) to guarantee availability

  • Keeping baby warm, cozy, and well-fed before the session

  • Allowing plenty of time for feeding breaks and soothing

My studio is designed to be a peaceful, comfortable environment for you and your baby, with everything from swaddles to props ready to go.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been wondering what is the best age for a newborn photoshoot, the answer is simple: the first two weeks are ideal, but meaningful, beautiful newborn portraits can be created at any age. My goal is always to capture your baby in the most natural and loving way—tiny details, sweet expressions, and all.
