As an Orange County newborn photographer, I’ve had the privilege of stepping into hundreds of homes in those magical, bleary-eyed first weeks after a baby arrives. And if there’s one thing I’ve noticed, it’s that the families who feel most at ease — the ones who are actually able to soak it all in — are the ones who did a little bit of preparing before baby came home.
I’m not talking about having a perfectly Pinterest-ready nursery. I’m talking about the practical, thoughtful kind of preparation that actually makes a difference in those first weeks. Here are the five things I recommend to every family I work with.
How to Get Ready for a New Baby at Home

5 Things I Recommend to Every Family
1. Stock Your Kitchen (Without Relying on Yourself to Cook)
This is number one on my list for a reason. New parents are exhausted, emotional, and running on very little sleep — and the last thing you want to be thinking about at 2am is what’s for dinner. Before your due date, I highly recommend stocking your freezer with easy meals and looking into a local meal delivery service so you have something reliable lined up.
In Orange County and Long Beach, a great option is Organic Oren, which offers healthy and delicious meals. Having nourishing food taken care of means more energy for what matters — snuggling your baby.

2. Line Up Overnight Support Before You Need It
I can’t tell you how many parents I’ve photographed who wish they’d known about night nurses sooner. A night nurse or postpartum doula can be an absolute game-changer, especially in those first few weeks when sleep deprivation is at its peak. The key is to book early — good night nurses in the Orange County area fill up fast, often before baby even arrives.
If you’re looking for a trusted local resource, I’d recommend reaching out to OC Newborn Nanny. Even booking just a few nights a week can make a world of difference for your recovery and your sanity.

3. Meet with a Lactation Consultant (Even If You Think You Won’t Need One)
Breastfeeding is one of those things that sounds straightforward but can come with a real learning curve for both you and your baby. I always encourage families to connect with a lactation consultant before birth if possible, or to have one’s contact information ready to go for those first days at home. Having that support in your back pocket can prevent a lot of stress and frustration.
A wonderful local resource is The Breastfeeding Center of Orange County, who serves families throughout Long Beach and Orange County. Whether you’re a first-time mom or you’ve been here before, having expert guidance can make all the difference.

4. Set Up a Simple Feeding and Diapering Station (or Two)
Here’s a tip I’ve picked up from watching new parents in their homes: having everything you need within arm’s reach is priceless. Before baby arrives, set up at least one dedicated spot in your home — ideally near where you’ll be spending the most time — stocked with diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, burp cloths, and a water bottle and snack for yourself.
Many families set up one station in the nursery and one in the living room or bedroom. It sounds simple, but not having to hunt for things at 3am is a small luxury that adds up quickly.
5. Book Your Newborn Photographer During Your Second Trimester
I know, I know — I may be a little biased on this one! But as a newborn photographer serving Long Beach and Orange County, I can tell you from experience: the families who reach out early are the ones who get to choose their session date, their style, and their photographer. The newborn window is tiny — ideally between 5 and 14 days old — and it passes before you know it.
Booking during your second trimester means we can plan everything in advance, talk through what to expect, and make sure that when your baby arrives, all you have to do is call me. No scrambling, no stress — just beautiful photos of one of the most fleeting seasons of your life.

A Final Note from Me
Getting ready for a new baby doesn’t have to mean doing everything perfectly. It just means setting yourself up to be a little more rested, a little more supported, and a little more present for those moments that go by so fast. If I can help you capture even a few of them, I’d be honored.
Serving families throughout Long Beach, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Irvine, and all of Orange County — I’d love to be your newborn photographer. Reach out here to check availability.
