There is something about a sleeping newborn, soft light, and a clean white backdrop that never gets old. When parents first come to me, many of them have seen elaborate newborn setups online. They wonder if they need baskets overflowing with props, dozens of color combinations, or themed setups. My answer is always the same. Simple is stunning. And years from now, you’ll appreciate that you chose simple.
Why I Love Simple, Natural Newborn Photos: Long Beach newborn photographer, Kristin Eldridge
What “Simple and Natural” Actually Means
Today I want to share why I lean toward natural, clean newborn photography. I also want to show you what that actually looks like in real life.
Simple does not mean boring. It means the focus stays exactly where it belongs: on your baby.
In a natural newborn session, I keep the color palette neutral. Think soft whites, creamy tones, and the occasional blush dusty mauve, light blue or pale green. Wraps are lightweight and soft. Props, when used, are minimal. A woven basket lined with chunky knit. A delicate lace wrap draped gently across a tiny back. A knit bonnet that frames the sweetest little face.
The goal is for nothing to compete with your newborn. Every detail in the frame exists to highlight their perfectly round cheeks, their dark lashes, their tiny curled fingers, because that is the whole point.

The Magic Is in the Details
One of my favorite things to capture during a newborn session is the little things parents are already starting to forget. The full head of dark hair. The way tiny hands stay folded together even in sleep. The little pout of lips mid-dream.
These details go fast. Newborns change so quickly in those first few weeks. A simple, clean image with soft light lets those details breathe. There is nothing distracting the eye. Just your baby, exactly as they are right now.
I also love the variety a simple session can still offer. We might shoot one look in a basket on the floor, flooded with natural light. Then we move to my posing bean bag for a close, intimate portrait. Each setup feels different, but the overall gallery has a cohesive, timeless feel that works beautifully together.

Why Natural Light Makes All the Difference
I shoot all of my newborn sessions in natural light. I love soft light because it highlights the newborn’s tiny details.
Window light is gentle and warm. It wraps around your baby’s features in the most flattering way. It creates dimension without being dramatic. And it gives every image that soft, airy quality that makes newborn photos feel like a quiet, peaceful moment, because that is exactly what they are.

These Photos Will Never Feel Dated
This is the part I feel strongly about. Trendy newborn setups are fun in the moment. But ten years from now, you want to look at your baby’s newborn photos and feel the same warmth you felt the day they were taken. Simple, natural images hold up over time. They do not scream a particular era or trend. They just show your baby.
That is what I am going for in every single session.
