The key to getting a good amount of variety in a newborn session is all in the flow! And the flow is important to get the clients in and out in under 90 minutes (or 45 minutes if it’s just the baby). There are times I need a little bit more time (if the baby is very fussy) but most clients don’t want to be in a session for hours.
This soft little squish of a girl was a sweet as they come. What fun to have a little sister! There’s something about getting the opposite gender for number two!
I can tell brand new parents by the way they handle a newborn. And it makes sense! Brand new babies have no neck strength. So, holding them or handing them off to someone else can feel like handling a piece of fragile glass.
I don’t think I need to tell you about how sweet it is when older siblings immediately fall in love with their brand new brother. The photos tell the story. It makes my job so easy when the love is just oozing out of your every pore. Whether it’s a brand new baby or a family that’s been a family for years, it doesn’t matter. You can’t fake love. And you can’t deny it either.
When I’m photographing families, I’ll ask them to do things like snuggle or get close or just hang out like you do at home. It’s so much fun to see them show love in their own unique way. And to see older siblings (and parents!) welcome a brand new life into the family, it’s like heart warming and tear-jerking and all the heart eye emojis.

All the high-fives and heart eyes go to sweet toddlers that are willing to cuddle their newborn sibling. Did you know that transitioning a toddler from being an only child to being a big brother or sister is tough? I was reading a study that likened the transition to a husband bringing a mistress home to his wife. It’s a little dramatic, but the thought of going from the only star to having to share the spotlight must feel that way to a 2 or 3 year old.
Thank goodness for easy going siblings that slide into their role as big sister or brother with the greatest of ease.

As much as I love photographing babies in my Long Beach studio, going to a client’s home is also wonderful. People are generally more comfortable in their own home and they get to put in little touches of their style into the photos. Not to mention the totally cozy feel the photos have. So, if you’re on the fence about where to do your photo session, consider doing it at your home. These photos show just how beautiful an at-home session can be.

Life doesn’t stay the same for long, does it? I’m sitting here on the eve of the last day of school. Tomorrow will conclude the 2013-2014 school year. In the fall, we’ll enter Jake’s laaaast year of middle school. I don’t even need to tell you what comes after that. After talking with a friend who is feeling a bit weepy about her daughter leaving middle school, I starting thinking about all the new stages of life. Whether you’re in the business of adding a new little baby to your family or saying good-bye to pre-school, elementary or middle school, EMBRACE the change. Love the opportunities that each stage brings.
And most of all, love summer. Because summer starts tomorrow y’all! We’ll be picnic-ing, beach-ing and in general, party-ing!
