Children’s Commercial Photography

Children’s Commercial Photography

Commercial photography is so different from portraiture.  But, because I’m good at working with kids (hello four years as a first grade teacher) they tend to run into the same vein.

Some of the differences I notice is that portrait work tends to focus on the connection between two people.  Sometimes it’s a mother and newborn, other times it’s a brother and sister.  The connection trumps everything else in the photo.

With commercial work, you want to convey a feeling.  But you’re also focused on showing the clothing.  Each photo should show movement in a way that makes the clothes appealing.

When I’m working outside for a commercial job, I can use natural or elements of architecture to add movement to the photo.  When I’m in the studio on a white backdrop, I have to rely on the child.  I’ll give direction and have them do a movement several times over to make sure I’m getting the expressions AND the flow of clothing I’m looking for.

Unexpected Surprises // Los Angeles Child Photographer

We all know sometimes things don’t go as planned.  But sometimes it makes things even better!  I was doing a photo session at a location that I had chosen for it’s golden leaves and big trees.  We were walking through the park and discovered a little patch of long grass and the twins wanted to go in and explore.  It turned out that these photos were some of my favorites.  I love the depth of field and how these little ones go from serious discovery to all kinds of joy written on their face.  Hurray for unexpected surprises!

Los Angeles Child Photographer

I just wrapped my very last photo session at the Rascals to Rebels Boutique.  They close their doors on Friday after 15 years in the community.  I’ve been working with them since 2008!  It’s bittersweet because the store will continue to have an online presence with the hope of also doing special events.

So that you don’t shed too many tears, take a look at these cutie pie sisters there were there over the weekend!

Family Photographer Los Angeles // Drawing emotion out in a photo

Beyond good lighting and composition, what makes a good photo?  Emotion.  We all know that fake smile kids give.  Yes, their eyes are open.  They are looking at the camera.  BUT, it’s dead.  There’s no emotion to draw in the viewer.

This is where your photographer comes in.  The photographer needs to know when to interact and when to be a silent observer.  It’s different in every situation.  sometimes a situation calls for words like ‘poopy diapers’ to be thrown around.  Other times, photographers notice something that is happening and they don’t want to be noticed.  This is where maybe a more serious emotion might be happening.

One thing I’ve learned is that it helps to have something to interact with.  In the case of these photos, it’s their dog.  They love Louie and he gave us something to laugh about and someone to cuddle with.  So be creative, how can you draw out emotion?

At Home Family Photographer // Los Angeles

She found me through the post on Modern Parents Messy Kids.  The one where I talked about how important it is to get in photos with your kids.  Coming on the heels of attending an unexpected funeral, she immediately called me.

We hit it off right away over the phone and by the time I arrived to her Los Angeles home to start the photo session, we were like old friends.  I wanted to start on their bed…just to let the kids get comfy and realize I was there to have fun.  It was click, click, YES.  This one.  This one is now a huge canvas in their home.  And doesn’t it just capture the life they’re living right at this moment?  LOVE.

After capturing so many sweet moments with their kids, we moved the party outside for some more formal posed photos and like every good couple should, a photo without the kids.  Remembering where it all started.
