Lately I’ve been having a lot of dogs coming to the newborn sessions. It’s actually a lot of fun and I’ll ask the family if this is their ‘first baby.’ So many married couples end up owning a dog before having children and the dog becomes the first baby. I love how they are protective over the new baby. Of course, safety is important, so I always ask families to keep their hands close by and photoshop them out if needed. That animal-baby bond is just adorable.
Family is everything. Right? I mean when it comes down to it, those people that you live with, those are the ones that matter most at the end of the day. We might struggle with getting everything finished at work and checked off on the to-do list. But, making family number one is so key to a happy life. I’m most fulfilled when I get to work with people that get this. And to be honest, if you’re investing money into photography than you value your family. Maybe that’s why I love my job so much!

If you don’t go home sandy, then it wasn’t a good beach day. And that applies to photo sessions too. I loved this sweet family that came out to Newport Beach this summer. We had fun getting sandy and little wet. It was on a super hot day, so no one minded.
I love these types of natural sessions, where everyone is just happy and enjoying the California sun!
We all know sometimes things don’t go as planned. But sometimes it makes things even better! I was doing a photo session at a location that I had chosen for it’s golden leaves and big trees. We were walking through the park and discovered a little patch of long grass and the twins wanted to go in and explore. It turned out that these photos were some of my favorites. I love the depth of field and how these little ones go from serious discovery to all kinds of joy written on their face. Hurray for unexpected surprises!

All the high-fives and heart eyes go to sweet toddlers that are willing to cuddle their newborn sibling. Did you know that transitioning a toddler from being an only child to being a big brother or sister is tough? I was reading a study that likened the transition to a husband bringing a mistress home to his wife. It’s a little dramatic, but the thought of going from the only star to having to share the spotlight must feel that way to a 2 or 3 year old.
Thank goodness for easy going siblings that slide into their role as big sister or brother with the greatest of ease.

Sometimes clients get sad when the sun goes away. I get it…there’s a lot of beauty in the sun peaking out from the trees. But, there’s also a lot of beauty in the subtle way that clouds mute all the colors and make them into a watercolor painting.
My job, as a photographer, is to take the situation (whatever it might be) and make it work. So, if it’s bright and sunny, I’m making the light work for me. If it’s cool-toned and overcast, I’m gonna make that work for me too!
This maternity session is the perfect example of a beautiful overcast day.

I’m feeling all the feels for this adorable family in their converse and poppy clothes! Really, I just love when a location comes together with the people I’m photographing. This set of urban walls was found in Santa Monica, CA. A client of mine told me about it and I thought it would be perfect for those that wanted something a little different.
Each family I photographed in this location took a different route. Some did lots of neutrals, others dressed it up a little. I love how everyone made this unique space their own.

I know that a perfectly posed family photo is a must for every photo shoot. But, I’ve also gotta say that my very favorite photos are the ones with movement and laughter. After I get the photos where everyone is smiling and looking at the camera, I get the fun started and then I just move around, capturing every angle. It really is my favorite part of the photo session!
