Why Not Just Do It Yourself?

This is a fair question, and I want to answer it honestly. Many parents try to take their own newborn photos. Some get a few sweet snapshots. But more often than not, I hear the same story afterward: it was stressful, the baby wouldn’t settle, the lighting was off, and nobody ended up happy with the results.

Here’s why DIY newborn photography is harder than it looks.

Newborns are unpredictable. A professional photographer knows how to read a baby’s cues. Knowing when to pause, when to feed, and when to try a different position comes from experience. It’s not something you can Google your way through in the moment.

Posing a newborn safely takes training. Those beautiful curled poses you see in newborn photos are not just adorable. They require specific technique to execute safely. An untrained person attempting these poses risks hurting a fragile newborn. A professional knows exactly how to support tiny limbs and keep baby safe throughout the session.

Lighting makes or breaks a newborn photo. Phone cameras and even consumer DSLRs struggle in typical home lighting conditions. Getting that soft, creamy look requires either professional studio lighting or extensive knowledge of natural light. Most living rooms simply don’t have the right conditions without knowing how to work with what’s there.

Editing is a skill all on its own. Even if you get a decent shot, newborn skin needs careful retouching. Blotchiness, redness, baby acne, and peeling skin are all normal and temporary. A professional retouches these naturally so your images look polished without looking unrealistic.

Add a Toddler Sibling and Things Get Even Harder

If you have an older child at home, attempting a DIY newborn session becomes a whole different challenge. I say this with complete empathy because I’ve seen it play out so many times.

Toddlers are wonderful and unpredictable and completely uninterested in doing what you need them to do right now. Getting a toddler to sit still, look at the camera, and be gentle with the baby all at the same time is genuinely difficult. Trying to do that while also managing a newborn, worrying about the lighting, and operating a camera is a lot to ask of any parent who is also running on very little sleep.

A professional photographer knows how to connect with toddlers. Keeping a little one engaged, making them feel like the star of the show, and capturing those genuine sibling moments is a big part of the job. One of my favorite reviews from a Long Beach family put it perfectly: “She worked her magic and somehow made pictures with my completely uncooperative toddler seem so natural. Her patience, amazing eye, and ninja-like moves made our photography session so memorable.”

When you hire a professional, you get to just be a parent. Someone else handles the toddler wrangling, the baby soothing, the lighting, and the posing. Your only job is to show up and enjoy it.

What’s Included in a Newborn Session with Me?

Every session includes a full client wardrobe with newborn wraps and props, so you don’t need to bring a thing. Sessions are relaxed and unhurried. Newborn sessions are ideally scheduled within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are sleepiest and most flexible for posing.

For families with a toddler sibling, the in-studio 90-minute session at $600 is my most popular option. It gives us plenty of time for sibling shots, family portraits, and solo newborn images without anyone feeling rushed.

Is It Worth It?

Every family has to make the right decision for their budget. But I’ll say this: in all my years photographing Orange County families, I have never once had a parent tell me they regretted booking a professional session. The newborn stage is over in the blink of an eye. These photos are the ones that end up framed on your walls, shared with grandparents, and pulled up on your phone when your child turns ten and you can barely believe they were ever that small.

That’s what you’re really paying for.
