Big Sister Stole the Show
There is something so special about photographing a family with a new baby and an older sibling. The curiosity is palpable. Big sister wanted to hold the baby. She wanted to kiss her head. She wanted to show her every stuffed animal in the room.
Those interactions are pure gold for a photographer.
We captured the two of them together on the bed, big sister gently stroking the baby’s cheek. We got the whole family curled up together. We got dad holding the baby while big sister wrapped her arms around his neck. Each frame told a different part of the same story.
Soft Neutral Colors That Photograph Beautifully
This family did such a wonderful job with their outfit choices. Mom wore a flowy cream dress that moved beautifully in the light. Dad kept it simple in a soft white linen shirt and warm tan pants. Big sister wore a delicate dusty pink dress that tied the whole palette together.
Nothing competed. Nothing distracted. Every eye goes straight to the faces and the connection between this family of four.
Soft neutrals are my top recommendation for lifestyle newborn sessions. Cream, white, beige, blush, sage, and warm gray all work beautifully. Avoid bright colors or busy patterns. They pull attention away from what matters most.
The Light in The Studio is Everything
One of the best things about booking a studio session is you don’t have to worry about light. Certain homes can get dark or your furniture might be dark in color. When you have a photo session in the studio, everything is soft and bright!
The light wraps around the baby’s tiny features. It caught the shine in big sister’s eyes. It made every image feel warm and calm and safe.
Good light is everything in lifestyle photography. It is one of the reasons I always recommend scheduling your session in the morning, when natural light is at its most gentle.
What to Expect from Your Lifestyle Newborn Session
Sessions are relaxed and unhurried. I follow the baby’s lead. If she needs to eat, we pause. If big sister needs a snack and a reset, we take a break. There is no rush.
I typically spend about 90 minutes with each family. We move through the session naturally, finding the best light and the most comfortable spots. By the end, you’ll forget you’re at a photo shoot. That is exactly when the best photos happen.
I recommend scheduling your session within the first two weeks after baby arrives. Newborns are sleepiest and most flexible in those early days, which makes the session much smoother for everyone.
