Sometimes a good family photo session means capitalizing on what you’ve got.  In this case, I had a very shy (and super cute) baby.  Instead of focusing on the fact that I was having a little bit of a hard time getting smiles, I decided to recruit her big brother.  I’ll always ask questions during the photo session.  Is she normally shy?  Did she skip a nap today?  What do you do at home to make her laugh?  Information is key.  If I have a baby that is comfortable around her big brother, I’ll ask him to help me tickle her feet or give her kisses.  (Huntington Beach Photographer)

Asking questions also helps with what strategies I’m going to use when everyone is in the photo.  Sometimes a baby likes loud noises and silly dancing.  Other babies aren’t quite sure about all that hoopla and would prefer a quite game of peek-a-boo.  Again, getting the information I need and then recruiting help is my key to a great photo session.

Want to see another cute family?  Check out this recently family photo session in Orange County.

Orange County Family Photographer

Family is everything.  Right?  I mean when it comes down to it, those people that you live with, those are the ones that matter most at the end of the day.  We might struggle with getting everything finished at work and checked off on the to-do list.  But, making family number one is so key to a happy life.  I’m most fulfilled when I get to work with people that get this.  And to be honest, if you’re investing money into photography than you value your family.  Maybe that’s why I love my job so much!

Unexpected Surprises // Los Angeles Child Photographer

We all know sometimes things don’t go as planned.  But sometimes it makes things even better!  I was doing a photo session at a location that I had chosen for it’s golden leaves and big trees.  We were walking through the park and discovered a little patch of long grass and the twins wanted to go in and explore.  It turned out that these photos were some of my favorites.  I love the depth of field and how these little ones go from serious discovery to all kinds of joy written on their face.  Hurray for unexpected surprises!

Family Photographer Los Angeles // Drawing emotion out in a photo

Beyond good lighting and composition, what makes a good photo?  Emotion.  We all know that fake smile kids give.  Yes, their eyes are open.  They are looking at the camera.  BUT, it’s dead.  There’s no emotion to draw in the viewer.

This is where your photographer comes in.  The photographer needs to know when to interact and when to be a silent observer.  It’s different in every situation.  sometimes a situation calls for words like ‘poopy diapers’ to be thrown around.  Other times, photographers notice something that is happening and they don’t want to be noticed.  This is where maybe a more serious emotion might be happening.

One thing I’ve learned is that it helps to have something to interact with.  In the case of these photos, it’s their dog.  They love Louie and he gave us something to laugh about and someone to cuddle with.  So be creative, how can you draw out emotion?

Los Angeles Family Photographer // Scene Stealers

These brothers were scene stealers.  I came to their house to photograph baby Savannah, but these two gave her a run for her money in the cute department.  My 3 kids are close in age, so when I photograph a family that is similarly spaced, I feel like kindred spirits.  There’s just something about little boys and the way they interact as brothers.  It can be gentle and sweet with hugs and snuggles.  It can also be a little rambunctious.  And the mix of those things it’s what’s so endearing.  Add in a baby sister for them to cuddle and protect and it’s magic.

Los Angeles Family Photographer // Hugging it out

Our friend Megan was over and she was asking me if I had any insights to raising kids that get along.  Now, I should preface this story by telling you that my kids are normal and have quarrels like everyone else.  But, for the most part they really do love each other.  We aren’t short on hugs around here and you’re never too old to cuddle on the couch either.

I told Megan that when my kids are at each other and someone has wronged someone else, I make them talk it out, apologize and then hug it out.  I make them hug until someone starts laughing.  And that’s when you know it’s all cool.  You can’t hug someone you hate.  So, just hug it out.

For the record, Megan told me long hugs were awkward.  And yes, long hugs are awkward but so is… ‘she’s breeeathing on me’ or ‘she’s touchhhhing me.’  You know the drill.
