How to Get Eyes that Pop in a Photo //Photoshop Tips and Tricks

Today, I wanted to share a photoshop tip with you that I learned years ago.  People sometimes comment about the way the eyes pop in my photos.  So, I’d like to share how to get eyes that ‘pop in a photo.’  But, first, I want to start off by saying a few things…

A.  I’m not a photoshop guru.  My philosophy in editing is that there’s more than one way to skin a cat.  I am self-taught, so just because I do it this way, doesn’t mean it’s the RIGHT way.

B.  There’s no substitute for good light.  You want to light your subject’s face with clean indirect light.  If it looks great to start, it’ll look amazing with a few tweaks.  But, you never want to try to ‘fix’ a photo.

dodged-eyes

Here’s the secret…the dodge tool.  The tool can be found in your tool palette and it looks like a lollipop!  At the top of your toolbar, select the midtones in the range option and set the opacity to 30%.  I dodge once or twice right in the middle of the eye.  Don’t over-do it, you can get an ‘alien look’ very quickly.  Play around with the settings for different eye colors.

Beef Cider Stew

I wonder who came up with the term comfort food?  It perfectly describes the way food makes you feel.  It warms your belly and makes you feel all cozy.  This stew is comfort food in every sense.  Maybe it has special meaning because a very sweet lady from church made it for us when we had our first baby.  We came home from the hospital in an ice storm and she had a big pot waiting for us on the stove.

Later she gave me the recipe.  It’s unlike any stew I’ve had before.  The ingredients are simple and the flavors are bright.  The beef doesn’t get bogged down with heavy bland flavor.  As we transition to fall, make a big pot of this stew, get yourself a crusty loaf of bread and get cozy!

Beef Cider Stew

(serves 6-8)

from Linda Richardson

2 large onions, diced

3T. butter

2 lbs. beef, cut in small chunks (I used tri-tip)

3T. flour

2t. salt

1/4t. pepper

1t. thyme

2 cups apple cider

1T. ketchup

3 large potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks

4 medium carrots, peeled and cut into small chunks

1 1/2c. green beans

Brown onions in butter (in a large stock pot).  Set aside and brown meat in the same pan.  Combine flour, salt, pepper and thyme.  Stir gradually into the meat.  Stir in cider and ketchup.  Add potatoes, carrots and green beans.  Simmer for an hour, or until meat is tender.

Doing what you say [Huntington Beach Child Photographer]

When people ask me about my business and what it takes to make it (ie. make money at it) as a photographer, there’s no real easy answer.  Where I live, everyone is a photographer.  With so much competition how do you set yourself apart?  Again, so many answers to this question.  Like being yourself, playing to your strengths, communicating your brand effectively.  But, one thing so many people skip over is so elemental, it’s easily missed.

Doing what you say you’re going to do.  And doing it WHEN you say you’ll do it.

I’m a big fan of under-promising and over-delivering.  Which means, I’ll tell my clients they will view about 35 fantastic images after their photo session, the reality is they will view about 50.  If I ever find myself in a situation where the photo session is a challenge, I know FOR SURE that I can get 35 fantastic images.  That’s my bottom-line.  But, I know my average photo session will yield about 50.  It’s a pleasant surprise.

Same thing goes with time-line.  I promise the photos will be delivered in 2 weeks.  That’s if everything in the world goes wrong.  99.9% of the time I have them back in a week.  Again, the client is pleasantly surprised.

These very simple things will do so much for your business.  If you tell someone you will email them the paperwork tomorrow, do it.  If you promise you will call in the morning.  CALL.  IN THE MORNING.  You’ll gain the trust of your clients and you’ll just feel better about yourself, knowing you’re someone who is trustworthy.

Slight change of subject…doesn’t being a parent make this so much easier!?  If we tell our kids we will be going out for dinner tonight, we better make sure that is going to happen.  They won’t forget!  They don’t forget when the friends are coming over or when you promised to play basketball.

This is Jillian and I on a fun girls night out, that I promised we’d do. :)

Rascals to Rebels Summer Photo Sessions [Rossmoor Photographer]

I don’t normally just leave the blog empty for a whole week.  We got back from a two week trip and I headed straight to my photo sessions at Rascals to Rebels.  I hit it with full-force!  The kids that came had tons of energy and it was a rare visit of sorts!  I had 2 newborns, a set of twins and a set of triplets!  The photo sessions are only 15 minutes long, all back to back, so be amazed at how much cute was squeezed out of a mere 15 minutes!!

To Sum it Up [Family Photographer Orange County]

Oh Mondays.  How do you seem to be so difficult to trudge through, yet slip through my fingers before I finish my to-do list?  Today was one of those days that I started out with a fire in my belly to accomplish a lot and ended up with an empty tank.  But, I was determined to blog about what I’ve been up to.  Because it’s been a while!

On a personal note, we had a great week of school, a speech meet for Jillian, out of town friends, in town friends and lots of great meals.  Work was wonderful and I got to see so many great clients that I now consider friends.  Here’s a bit of what I photographed…

A little catching up [Los Angeles Baby Photographer]

I’m working on a blog post right now that will hopefully go up this evening, but in the meantime, a little housekeeping!

Quite a few of you asked about Baby Blake’s nursery.  Melody has graciously offered to share all the sources for the items in her nursery:

rocker – room & board
orange book holders – container store
stuff animal holder – brother-in-law made it
ottoman pouf – CB2
rug – I forget…random online place
crib & changing table – Oeuf Sparrow Crib & Changing Table
bedding – mother-in-law made it all
lamp – urban outfitters online
head band holder – urban outfitters online
head bands – my sister made most of them **opening a website soon
clothing wall system – DIY…we bought 2 white storage wall cubes from CB2 and then spray painted them pink and put them together…then we bought a clothing rack pole and mounted it to the bottom of the cubes to hang the clothes.
clothing tags – Sugarbooger, Big Dots

Also, I wanted to share another exciting bit of news!  One of my images was used on People online.  It was for my work with Little Skye Children’s Boutique!  I shared it with instagram and facebook a few weeks ago, but wanted to share it on the blog too. :)

The other bit of excitement is that Erika’s home is now featured on Inspired by This!

Style Findings: Wallpaper [Orange County Photographer]

Do you feel like wallpaper is everywhere you look?  One on hand, it’s an easy way to update the look of a room.  On the other hand, it’s so…permanent.  I’ve been doing a few things to my tiny living area, like switching out the dining chairs and the light fixtures.  Next on my plan was wallpaper, but now I feel so wishy-washy about it.

I’m weary of graphics that will overwhelm my tiny space.  I’m feeling like subtle is the way to go…

And I want it to feel elegant without being too flowery or stuffy.  This Farrow and Ball is my current favorite at the moment.  I really need to take a trip downtown to look at samples.  What do you guys think…do you have wallpaper, do you you love it, do you feel like it’s just too permanent, do you not worry about these things???

Habanero Jelly [In the Kitchen]

Handmade gifts are the best.  Recently a friend at church gave us a jar of Habanero jelly and I was excited to try it.  I love bold flavors and idea of spicy and sweet together sounded pretty fantastic!  She recommended serving it with cheese, so I bought a big slice of  brie.  Flavors like this need a serious cracker, so I sliced some rosemary bread from Costco into thin slices, brushed it with olive oil and toasted it in a 425 degree oven for about 10 minutes.

Can I just say we are obsessed!?  We had it as an appetizer with friends one night, then decided to have it for dinner the next night.  It’s so yummy.

So, here’s my current snacking obsession:

Guacamole

This is one of my most favorite things to make…and eat!  I grew up in Montana and having an avacado was a huge treat.  I remember thinking that the green mush looked pretty disgusting and my parents would respond with…great, more for us!  When I finally got around to trying it, I was hooked.  Now, I can’t have Mexican food without it.

The absolute best version of guac that I’ve tried comes from Lottie and Doof. (a food blog I stumbled upon…check out their mac and cheese too!)

  • 4 haas avocados
  • 1/4-1/2 red onion, diced (about 1/2 cup diced red onion)
  • Bunch of cilantro, chopped
  • 2 limes
  • 1/2 habanero/serrano chile, stemmed and seeded (depending on how hot you want it you can add seeds)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper

The best chips to eat with this are the blue corn tortilla chips from Trader Joe’s.  They are so salty…and the perfect hearty chip to stand up to the guacamole.

And since you’ve bought limes, you should go ahead and make limeade.  We have a lemon tree, so my kids are lemonade making pros.  I suggested swapping limes in for the lemons and it was phenomenal!
