Resolutions [Long Beach Family Photography]

Are you ready for New Years?  I’ve already started stocking my fridge with tons of fruits and vegetables.  There are a few new recipes I want to introduce to the rotation too.  Outside personal health, I also want to focus more on what matters most and let the silly little things slide.  That’s definitely harder said than done.  But, thankfully new beginnings don’t have to happen in the calendar year, they can happen every morning.

(Now that things have slowed down I have the time to show you some sessions that happened over the past few months!)

Merry Christmas!

This year, we took our photos on Thanksgiving Day.  My sister in law, Jennifer, took this photo.  She did such a good job, right!?  I admit to being a little crazy about having a nice picture to send out.  I mean a photographer has to represent, right?  My kids are cute on their own, but getting everyone looking decent at the same time a little more challenging.  So, Jennifer walked with us down to the pier on Long Beach (I love under pier lighting!) and snapped away.  I didn’t even have to swap a head!  We all looked and smiled.  Extra piece of apple pie for everyone!

This was the actual photo that we chose for the card.  It was really hard to decide between this one and the top, but ultimately this one won out.  So nice when you have choices.  Thank you Jennifer!

Every time I have to be in front of the camera, I am reminded why I like to be behind it!  I don’t know what I look like.  I’m asking, where should this arm go?  Are the kids smiling?  Ahhhh!

On another note…what you guys making for Christmas dinner?   Here’s my plan…Barefoot Contessa’s Pan Fried Onion Dip.  I talk about it here and share the recipe.  It’s, I’m not kidding you, SOOO good.  I love to serve it in the afternoon when people are hungry and dinner won’t be ready for a few more hours.  This year, I got thick ridged fancy potato chips and I’ll cut up some broccoli, carrots and snap peas.

Prime Rib is where it’s at for the dinner hour.  I had the butcher season the roast with a rub, so all I have to do is throw it in the oven.  I’ll make a horseradish cream sauce.  Also from Barefoot Contessa.  Mashed Potatoes only make sesnse.  Jake, my 12 year old, can peel the whole bag for me now.  Put those kids to work! :)

I’m also making Sagaponack Corn Pudding.  It’ll be my first time making it, so I’ll let you know how it turns out.  Looking at the list of ingredients, I can’t go wrong!

Roasted vegetables (brussel sprouts and carrots) will make us feel a little less indulgent and we’ll finish the meal off with my mother in law’s famous apple pie and ice cream.

And after that we’ll go back to our healthy eating ways…yay for New Year’s resolutions!

Spray Paint DIY Projects: Gold and Silver

Can you believe Christmas is the day after tomorrow?  I feel like we just pulled those decorations down from the attic.  And I’m really going to miss waking up to the Christmas tree lights.  (Brent sets it on a timer…how cool is that!?)  Anyway, I wanted to share one last DIY post of some cool things I’ve done recently with spray paint.  Gold and silver, of course.  My friend, Heather, introduced me to DesignMaster spray paint and I’ll never go back.  You can spray paint anything with that stuff.  And I put it to the test.

Head over to Little Skye Blog to check out a few of my projects!

Baby puts everything in his mouth! [Long Beach Baby Photographer]

Life is about how you look at it, right?  I used to call the stage between newborn and sitting up the jr. high phase of babies.  It’s just a bit awkward to photograph…they don’t want to curl up any more like a new baby and they aren’t able to full support their body to show off all those fabulous baby rolls.

So, I decided to start focus on what they do best.  And that’s putting things in their mouth.  Feet, hands, blankets.  There’s really no discrimination.  They’re exploring the world with their mouth.  Another great trick of 2-5 month olds?  Rolling over.  They naturally give you so many poses when you let them go on a nice soft bed.  And, of course bare skin.  The only time in life that rolls of baby fat are cute!

Christmas Advent Activities for Kids

This is the first year I’ve tried an activity advent with the kids.  I think we did a chocolate one at some point during the toddler years,  and there’s this amazing interactive one on the computer by Jacquie Lawson that my mother-in-law buys the kids every year.  But, we decided to try something different this year.  There are no chocolates and no gifts in our advent.  It’s about family time and making memories together.  We are on day 17 and I’m so excited about the things we’ve been able to do and the last week we have before Christmas.

Some of the activities are very simple, like stringing popcorn or making a sweet treat.  Other have naturally happened and are a bit more exciting.  Like going to Disneyland for a Brad Paisley concert!  (Friends invited us, so I planned it into the advent.)  We’ve also done some service projects together, like working a food booth at church and making cards for shut-ins and shopping for gifts for others.  Along with the sock project I’ll tell you about soon.

The Christmas season is exciting.  And I want my kids to know it’s not just a count-down to opening presents.  It’s a time to really focus on others and remember what we are celebrating.  This amazing moment when God gave us the most important gift, Jesus.  Heaven coming to earth.

I hope you and yours are enjoying the month of December.  And, in light of the recent tragic events, I hope you are focused on family and the things in life that really matter.

Photographing sisters at home [Long Beach Family Photographer]

Sisters.  It’s a bond no one can break.  Even from the beginning, they know they are connected for life.  If you have a sister, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Black and White Newborn Images [Newport Beach Baby Photographer]

It stormed all last weekend, so I ended up doing newborn shoots Saturday and Sunday, all cozied up in my clients’ homes.  This session happened on Sunday in the afternoon and as we were running out of light and the boys were still napping, these wonderful sibling moments just landed in my lap.  Mom and dad woke up the boys, I got my settings dialed in on the camera, lined up my little ‘bribes’ and toys and all the stars aligned.  What a gift

DIY Holiday Bulb Garland [Style Findings]

Are you in full-on holiday mode yet?  We are having Brent’s staff party tonight and last night we hosted the college group for a party.  My house is decorated and I’m loving enjoying every single activity this month!  Modern Parents Messy Kids is featuring my tutorial on how to make these holiday bulb garlands.  I love the fresh and modern look as a change from greenery!
